Organometallic Molecular Materials Group

Research interest of the group Materiales Moleculares Organometálicos is focused on the design of molecules, supramolecular species and nanostructured materials of transition metals, which show optoelectronic properties of interest and also in studying the activation and/or formation of bonds in unsaturated ligands in platinum group metal complexes.

Design of molecular and supramolecular systems of transitions metals. Study of their optoelectronic properties and potential applications

The goal of this research line is focused on the preparation, structural characterization and properties of light-emitting molecules. Our synthetic work includes: the study of homo and heteropolynuclear platinum complexes, stabilized by η2-M…C≡C bonds and/or Pt…M ó M…M interactions, the coordination of chromophoric conjugated ligands to Pt(II) and the functionalization of coordinated ligands. We also study the optical properties (absorption and emission) of the final photoluminescent molecular materials which have potential applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), bioimages and sensors for bioactive molecules or solar cells.

Preparation and study of the reactivity of transition metal complexes with unsaturated ligands. Activation and formation of bonds (P-C, C-C, C-H)

This line is centered in the chemistry of metal complexes of platinum group (Pt, Pd, Rh, Ir, Ru), which contain unsaturated ligands (alkyne, alkynyl, alkynylphosphines, vinylidenes,…), with special efforts in the study of activation and/or formation of thermodynamic stable bonds and in the formation of new molecules of interest.

Study of electronic communication in organometallic complexes

The goal of this line is the design of new systems containing electroactive groups. Synthesis of new molecules having red-ox groups is able to perform electronic functions at the molecular level. Our interest in these systems is focused on their potential application in new advanced materials, which can act as molecular electronic switches.

Preparation and study of optical and catalytic properties of mesoporous materials

The development of new nanostructured materials is attracting an increasing interest not only due to their widespread use as catalyst supports, but also because they can display other interesting properties such as recognition and selection, sensing, controlling release and biochemical or photo-electronic functions. Our interest research is centered in the development of new eco-friendly methods (reactions and extraction at room temperature, absence of organic co-solvents, etc) for the synthesis of new hybrid mesoporous materials functionalized with coordination complexes that have catalytic or electronic properties, as well as in the study of the properties of the new materials thus obtained.
